Microsoft - Internet Explorer 11 Administration Kit 11 and Internet Explorer 11 Blocker Toolkit

Last week we released Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 and an updated version of Internet Explorer Administration Kit 11, which can help you customize Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. Since Internet Explorer 11 will be delivered through Automatic Updates, I wanted to take this opportunity to also remind you about the availability of the Internet Explorer 11 Blocker Toolkit.

To help our customers stay up-to-date—taking advantage of modern web standards, improved security, and better performance—Microsoft will distribute Internet Explorer 11 as a high-priority update through Automatic Updates for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) x86 and x64, and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 x64. The Internet Explorer 11 Blocker Toolkit—like its predecessors for Internet Explorer 10, Internet Explorer 9, etc.—disables the automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 11. It is intended for organizations that would like to block the automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 11 to machines in environments where Automatic Updates are enabled, until they are ready to deploy Internet Explorer 11.

Here are some need-to-know details:

•	The Blocker Toolkit is not needed if you use other update management solutions, such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or System Center Configuration Manager. It only applies to environments that use Automatic Updates via Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
•	The Blocker Toolkit will not prevent someone from downloading and installing Internet Explorer 11 manually.
•	All Blocker Toolkits are version-specific, so installing the Internet Explorer 10 Blocker Toolkit will not prevent Internet Explorer 11 from installing.
•	The Blocker Toolkit will not block automatic delivery to users on preview versions of Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7, ensuring these users benefit from security improvements in the final release.

The Blocker Toolkit contains two components, an executable blocker script and a Group Policy Administrative Template (.ADM file). Both create the registry entry "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\

Internet Explorer\Setup\11.0\DoNotAllowInternet Explorer 11" with a value of "1" to block. To remove the block, run the script again or disable the policy. Note that if this policy is removed or set to "Not Configured," the registry setting will remain; the policy needs to be disabled to re-enable the automatic update for Internet Explorer 11.
