Manuals - Free ebook: Windows 10 IT Pro Essentials Support Secrets

This ebook is for anyone whose responsibilities include training people to use Windows 10.

That group includes full-time professional trainers, of course, but it also includes IT pros and those brave souls who staff the help desk in corporations. Most of all, it includes the incredibly large population of people who have earned a reputation for being “the person who knows Windows.”

With that knowledge comes a seemingly endless stream of questions from friends, family, and coworkers. As Windows 10 moves into its second full year and begins to take over an increasing share of the installed base of PCs, many of those questions are going to begin “How do I…”

That’s where this ebook comes in. My goal here is to introduce the building blocks of Windows 10 to you in a way that can help you answer those questions quickly. It also offers the kind of information you need to go one step further, offering the kind of extended details about how Windows 10 works that might, just might, answer that next question before it’s even asked.

I’m grateful to the developers and designers at Microsoft who are building Windows 10, for giving me an operating system that’s fun to write about. I’d also like to thank Microsoft Press, which gave me complete editorial independence for this project. Every word in this book comes from my personal experience. I hope you find it useful.

I encourage you to share your feedback about this book directly with me. Email your comments to me at

Tips - AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try connect again

During these days i faced this problem:

Cisco Any connect and relatives configuration files was corretely installed and after VPN user and password insertion I got this error:

"AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try connect again"

The solution was to verify that it was not checked this option:

Veeam 9 - HyperV 2012 R2 and public Lan Fault during backup

During last months we faced a strange problem on Cluster HyperV 2012 R2 VM backup.

Infact, randomly, with Veeam 9 we got a single hyperV public lan to be unreachable causing backup failure (Heartbit lan was working fine)

Here they are actions taken trying to solve issue:

1. When a single host was unreachable with public lan we connected to freeze host using Heartbeat lan via RDP.

We stopped any Veeam processes and services to finish veeam backup (VM was always in backing up mode in HyperV console)

2. There was not any solution to put public lan to working again other than reboot host or disabling and renabling lan connection.

3. Backup faults happened again utilizing Veeam Throttling feature and using windows backup tools indeed than Veeam itself.

4. Finally we suspected that problem was related to lan driver itself.

Searching on internet Lan device name and server model we found that:

HP DL380 Gen8 servers as Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts and HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR / Broadcom NetXtreme

http://serverfault.com/questions/742520/any-known-fixes-for-hyper-v-host-networking-randomly-stops-responding

What really helped us in our case, was not only to disable the VMQ in all affected Network adapters properties as suggested by Microsoft, but also to disable it in the Virtual machine's properties (to uncheck “Enable Virtual Machine Queue” under each of the virtual machine settings). By default is it enabled.

From Miscrosoft Article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2986895
Resolution
This issue is resolved in Broadcom driver b57nd60a.sys version 16.8 and newer. In March 2015, Broadcom published driver version 17.0 for download. In April 2015, HP published version 16.8 of the driver for their affected network adapters, here is one of their download locations. Please contact your server OEM if you need a driver that is specific to your server.

More information
If you are unable to update your network adapter driver to resolve the issue, you can work around the issue by disabling VMQ on each affected Broadcom network adapter by using the Set-NetAdapterVmq Windows PowerShell command. For example, if you have a dual-port network adapter, and if the ports are named NIC 1 and NIC 2 in Windows, you would disable VMQ on each adapter by using the following commands:

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NIC 1" -Enabled $False
Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NIC 2" -Enabled $False
You can confirm that VMQ is disabled on the correct network adapters by using the Get-NetAdapterVmq Windows PowerShell command.

Note By default, VMQ is disabled on the Hyper-V virtual switch for virtual machines that are using 1-gigabit network adapters. VMQ is enabled on a Hyper-V virtual switch only when the system is using 10-gigabit or faster network adapters. This means that by disabling VMQ on the Broadcom network adapter, you are not losing network performance or any other benefits because this is the default. However, you need to do this to work around the driver issue.

Get-NetAdapterVmqQueue shows the virtual machine queues (VMQs) that are allocated on network adapters. You will not see any virtual machine queues that are allocated to 1-gigabit network adapters by default.

Windows 7/8.X/2012/R2 - All patches Monthly rollup

Microsoft released a single Windows 7 Sp1 rollup that contain all security and non-security fixes released patches released since beginning.

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=3125574

If you are going to install this one update, and then you only need new updates released after April 2016.

And since this update can be injected into Windows 7 SP1 media, it’s fully supported to mount a Windows 7 SP1 image (WIM file), then inject this update into it.

See https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744559(v=ws.10).aspx for the details of how to do this.

To apply this update, you must install the April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 (KB3020369).

Consider that monthly non-security updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2) will be available as a monthly rollup (fixes rolled up together into a single update).

Each month, we will release a single update containing all of the non-security fixes for that month.

Wsus - Windows 10 problem and Update enables ESD decryption provision in WSUS in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2

We faced problems with Wsus server and Windows 10 clients.

This fix solve this kind of issue.

This article describes an update to a feature that enables Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to natively decrypt Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section.

Note You must install this update on any WSUS server that is intended to sync and distribute Windows 10 upgrades (and feature updates) that are released after May 1, 2016.

Wsus - Update to enable WSUS support for Windows 10 feature upgrades KB3095113

This update enables Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) on a Windows Server 2012-based or a Windows Server 2012 R2-based server to sync and distribute feature upgrades for Windows 10. This update is not required to enable WSUS to sync and distribute servicing updates for Windows 10.

Important This update must be installed before you sync the upgrades classification. If the update is not installed when the upgrades classification is enabled, WSUS will see the Windows 10 build 1511 feature upgrade even if it can’t properly download and deploy the associated packages. If you try to sync any upgrades without having first installed KB 3095113, you will populate the SUSDB with unusable data that must be cleared before upgrades can be properly distributed. This situation is recoverable but the process is nontrivial and can be avoided altogether if you make sure to install the update before enabling sync of upgrades. If you have encountered this issue, refer to the following article:
For more information about Windows 10 servicing and how feature upgrades and servicing updates differ, see the following TechNet topic:
This update also fixes an issue in which Windows 10-based computers are displayed as "Windows Vista" on Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012.

Sophos - How to enable webcontrol verbose logging

-----------------------------------------
Article ID:116769
Linked Article:How to enable Sophos Web Intelligence (Web Protection feature) and Web Control logging
-----------------------------------------

What To Do

Web Filtering logging

By default only blocked URLs are logged to the default SAV.txt log.
The following information is logged in SAV.txt:
  • Each blocked URL
  • The referrer URL
  • The name of the user
  • The Sophos Labs reason code
It is however possible to enable more verbose logging which provides information on multiple components of SAV to do with Web Filtering. To enable these logs, follow these instructions:
  1. Open Regedit and navigate to the following location:
    32-bit:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
    64-bit:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
  2. Add a new DWORD named LogLevel
  3. Set the value to 3
  4. Open the service manager (services.msc) and restart the Sophos Web Intelligence service to start logging.

Values

1 - Information
2 - Trace
3 - Debug

Logs written

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swisdiag.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swifdiag.log
%TEMP%\swifdiag.log

Web Control logging

Verbose logging for Web Control can be achieved with the following instructions:
  1. Open Regedit and navigate to the following location:
    32-bit:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
    64-bit:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
  2. Add a new DWORD named LogLevel
  3. Set the value to 3
  4. Navigate to the following location:
  5. 32-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Web Intelligence\Web Control\
    64-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\Web Intelligence\Web Control\
  6. Add a new DWORD named LogLevel
  7. Set the value to 3
  8. Open the service manager (services.msc) and restart the Sophos Web Control and Sophos Web Intelligence services to start logging.

Values

1 - Information
2 - Trace
3 - Debug

Logs written

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swc_diag.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swc_messaging.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swc_rms_diag.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swifdiag.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\swisdiag.log
%TEMP%\swc_messaging.log
%TEMP%\swifdiag.log

Disabling Logging

  1. Open Regedit and navigate to the following location:
    • 32-bit
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Web Intelligence\Web Control\
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
    • 64-bit
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\Web Intelligence\Web Control\
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\Web Intelligence\
  2. Change the value in LogLevel to 0 at each location.

Note: Restarting the service(s) isn't required. If logging persists, a restart may be required. This can occur when the processes involved are not restarted with the service.
